Cartographer – DTP Cartographer/Project Leader

HarperCollins is one of the leading cartographic publishers in the UK responsible for the world renowned Times and Collins map and atlas ranges as well as the Collins Bartholomew data and Contract mapping brand. We are currently looking for two cartographers to join our Glasgow Cartographic Services team. The Cartographic Services team is responsible for a range of tasks within the cartographic office from initial design and editorial compilation, to production and output.

The first role is as a Content Editor/Project Leader and is responsible for cartographic compilation and maintenance of editorial standards across the full range of our own brand and custom mapping portfolio. The role has input into all levels of the cartographic process including initial inception through to final delivery. The successful candidate will have a sound knowledge of cartographic and text editorial practices and a keen eye for detail. Language or translation skills and an awareness of the major DTP packages currently used in the cartographic field are major bonuses.

The second role is as a DTP Cartographer/Project Leader responsible for data manipulation and working up cartographic briefs or compilations using industry standard DTP software. The role encompasses elements of design, interpretation, cartography and desktop publishing. A sound working knowledge of the major design and DTP packages currently used in the cartographic field is a must, with expertise in Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Quark Xpress being most desirable. A general understanding of cartographic editorial practices and an awareness of ArcGIS and/or MapPublisher is also desirable.

Successful candidates will have excellent organisational skills, be self motivated and able to manage their time effectively. They will be strong communicators, able to work within a small team and be comfortable liaising with colleagues and customers as required. They must take pride in their work and be able to work to demanding deadlines whilst maintaining quality at all times. A degree in Cartography or a related subject is expected although candidates with relevant experience in the field will also be considered.
